Jean Baptiste Paquotte was the nephew of Sébastien Paquotte. He apprenticed with Simon as a bow maker and later studied violin making with Sébastian in Paris from 1841 to 1849. He worked for Lafleur until 1863, when he took over his uncle's business located at rue de l'Ecole-de-Medecine in Paris. In 1877, he moved to 99 boulevard St-Germain and retired in 1879. He was highly regarded as a connoisseur, and his own violins and bows were of high quality, utilizing fine materials.
