Petter Hellstedt
Violin maker
–
Petter Hellstedt was likely a pupil of Olof Arling and succeeded to his business. The earliest label was dated 1736. He was licensed as a violin maker in 1742 and was assisted by his son Petter Alexander starting in 1760. His widow continued the shop for several years. He was a prolific maker, with over 500 instruments recorded, though he was inconsistent in quality. His violins and cellos were of small form, and he produced various viola models up to tenor size. Instruments were usually unpurfled and featured yellow-brown or orange varnish, typically following Tyrolean patterns.
