George Haxton was a self-taught maker active from 1907. He established himself in Glasgow in 1910. His career was interrupted by military service from 1914 to 1918, but he resumed work in Glasgow at 15 Roy Street. He completed over 70 instruments based on Stradivari and mostly Guarneri models. His work was characterized by very fine, disciplined craftsmanship with golden brown and dark orange brown oil varnish that was rich and thickly applied.
