Frank Sindelar
Violin maker
–
Frank Sindelar was a pupil of John Hornsteiner in Chicago. He established himself independently there in 1917. His work included Stradivari and Guarneri models. He completed about 300 violins, 30 violas, and 10 cellos, but very few were sold under his own label; most were sold through Hornsteiner and other dealers. He used an excellent orange oil varnish, along with a dark red-brown and brittle red varnish. He was the inventor of 'Super-Sensitive Stainless Steel Strings'.
