Alfio Messina was active in Catania from around 1920. He was well-regarded as a teacher. His models were derived from Stradivari and featured dark golden-yellow varnish. They were branded, typically within a black circle: `A. M. H. ' The prefix 'J. M. J. ' on his labels represented 'Jesus, Mary and Joseph'.
