Marino & Mario Capicchioni
Violin maker
(fl. 1940 – 1977)
This joint attribution covers instruments from the Rimini workshop where Mario Capicchioni assisted his father, Marino, from around 1943 onward. Marino himself was entirely self-taught: after early work as a cooper and a spell in a French guitar factory, he settled in Rimini in 1929 on the advice of local violin makers and went on to develop one of the most personal and unmistakable styles of the twentieth-century Italian revival, earning recognition at exhibitions in Padua, Ascoli Piceno, Rome and Cremona. Many of the pieces the two produced together in Marino's later years still carry his own label and brand rather than any joint or separate mark for Mario; the individual hand behind a given "Capicchioni" instrument from this period is not always separable.
