Willem van der Sijde recorded as a sailor in Amsterdam in 1684. He was an active violin maker from 1689 and remained in Amsterdam until 1692, although Henley cites a label from The Hague dated 1691. His violins featured a very large Amati model with broad whalebone purfling and a flat arch, although a broad edge channel slightly restricted the design. The finish was quite coarse, and he used a fine golden-brown semi-transparent varnish.
