Hendrick Willems
Violin maker
(c. 1630 – c. 1700)
Hendrick Willems I headed the Ghent workshop that succeeded that of Jooris Willems, the earliest documented maker of the Willems dynasty and Hendrick's own father — one of Flanders' most important lute-making families before its move into violin making in the seventeenth century. The workshop passed in turn to Hendrick Willems II. Flemish makers of this period, the Willems among them, worked without a mould, setting their ribs into a channel cut directly inside the back plate rather than around a form, and their instruments are noted for rich oil varnishes ranging from yellow and brown to a deep, craquelured red — among the most admired surfaces of the whole Flemish school.
