Angelo Toppani

Venetian by birth, sometime between 1699 and 1706, Angelo De Toppani did not settle in Rome until 1740, where he married a Roman woman, Giacinta Venturelli. His own professional title, "Violinaro," first appears in the record between 1742 and 1748, when his premises sat near the Chiesa Nuova; by 1760 he had relocated within the same parish, closer to Palazzo del Drago, and may have gone on working until 1767. His violins, built to a model closer to Tecchler than to his own Venetian training but with a lean toward the more Italianate taste of Guarneri, are rare today — well-chosen wood, a good sweet tone, and a yellow or light-brown varnish. A real labelled example survives: "Angelus de Toppanis fecit Romae Anno Dni 1735."
