Evasio Emilio Guerra
Violin maker
(1875 – 1956)
Initially a violinist, Evasio Emilio Guerra showed an early talent for violin making and is thought to have received his training from Carlo Oddone and Romano Marengo Rinaldi, by extension. His modest financial circumstances required him to work quickly, and his lack of business acumen restricted him to building instruments almost entirely for other makers, including Fagnola, Oddone, Marengo Rinaldi and Francesco Guadagnini, supplying violins in the white. Despite his speed, the details of craftsmanship in Guerra's work are excellent, especially his edgework and purfling. He generally constructed his instruments based on the preferred models of the commissioning maker, but his personal instruments follow a Rocca or Guadagnini model and have earned him a reputation as one of Turin's finest 20th-century makers.
