George Ruoff
Violin maker
(1646 – 1725)
George Ruoff created one alto viola known for its distinctive model and fine craftsmanship. It featured a medium high arch and very large open soundholes with short wings, which were set slanting across the front. The corners were short, and the purfling was neat. The scroll had an oval shape, with a distinctive 'NT' channel cut between the flutes on the front face of the volute. It was finished with a rich red-brown varnish. A manuscript label indicated: Georg Rueff Lauten / und geigenMacher in / Faulenbach nagst by Füssen 1666.
