Etienne Maire
Violin maker
(1867 – 1935)
Etienne Maire was the son and pupil of E. Maire-Breton. He worked in Paris around 1898 to 1900, but he returned to Spain and settled in Madrid. His instruments were based on Stradivari, Guarneri, and Maggini models and were well executed. The varnish was generally a dull red-brown, though it appeared yellow to golden-brown during his Madrid period. Instruments made in Barcelona were branded, while his Paris work featured a manuscript label.
