Gaetano Francesco Lorenzo Guadagnini I
Violin maker
(1750 – 1817)
Gaetano Francesco Lorenzo Guadagnini was the son, pupil, and successor of Giovanni Battista Guadagnini. In 1771, he preceded his father from Parma to Turin, but the family joined him shortly thereafter. He worked as his father's chief assistant alongside his brothers Filippo and Carlo until Giovanni Battista's death in 1786, managing some of the extensive correspondence with Count Cozio di Salabue during this time. Afterward, he collaborated with Carlo as 'Fratelli Guadagnini', producing guitars and establishing a strong reputation as violin repairers and restorers. Upon his death, the business was passed to his nephew, Gaetano (II), the son of Carlo. He continued to use his father's label in his own early works until around 1799.
