Joseph Calot
Violin maker
(1793 – 1852)
Joseph Calot was born in Mirecourt and was a pupil of Clement in Paris. He worked in several towns across France, including Nimes, Besancon, Lorient, and again in Paris. From 1819, he was in Berne and formed a partnership with Augiere starting in 1830. Starting in 1832, he operated in the shop of Pressenda in Turin. He also made guitars. His workmanship exhibited typical French quality and consistency. He was famed for his own 'secret' varnish.
