Joseph Benoit Boussu
Violin maker
(c. 1730 – c. 1790)
Joseph Benoit Boussu created finely worked, albeit slightly mannered, interpretations of the Amati model in a characteristic Flemish style, made without a separate upper block. He featured a deeply carved scroll with an extended final turn and a prominent eye, along with a generally rather full arch. The varnish was a good yellow-brown. He produced violas and at least one compact-sized cello. A decorated cittern, branded and labelled Amsterdam 1771, suggests that he was also active in that location. Several examples are housed in the Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels.
