Alfio Batelli
Violin maker
(1903 – 1977)
Alfio Batelli studied under V. de Zorzi. He worked for Paoletti Vezio before starting his own business in via Tito Speri, Florence. In 1947, he emigrated to Chicago, where he was employed by Kagan & Gaines. Around 1950, he relocated to Weisshaar in Los Angeles and ultimately established himself in Monterey Park in 1963. He was primarily engaged as a repairer in the US. Over 300 violins, violas, and cellos crafted in Florence were based on classical models and featured orange to red-brown varnish. His workmanship varied, but it displayed great character. His work was branded and inscribed internally.
