Pietro Grulli, one of the last traditional late Cremonese violin makers, initially made pianos with Francesco Ghisi before turning to violin making during the wars of Italian independence in the 1860s when demand for pianos declined. His violins, derived from Amati, often feature poorly finished work, with awkward outlines and imprecise purfling. Grulli's output was small, and his work often lacks refinement and consistency, characterized by long body lengths, heavy edgework, and unusual arching.
