Erwin Hertel was a student at Mittenwald starting in 1928 and moved to the USA in 1933 to work in Philadelphia. Later, he was employed by Emil Herrmann in New York alongside Simone Sacconi. He established himself independently in Long Island, New York, from 1952 and eventually settled in Pittsburgh. His work included Stradivari models for violin and viola, as well as Stradivari and Montagnana cello ...Read More models. He used red spirit-based varnish. A viola he created was illustrated in the catalogue of the Sacconi Loan Exhibition in New York in 1966. Read Less
