Erwin Hertel
Violin maker

Erwin Hertel was a student under Hermann Todt in Markneukirchen from 1925 until 1928 and then worked for Hanz Lorenz in Adorf until moving to the USA in 1930 to work in Philadelphia. Later, he was employed by Emil Herrmann in New York alongside Simone Sacconi. He established himself independently in Long Island, New York, from 1952, moved to New York City in 1961, and eventually settled in Pittsburgh. His work included Stradivari models for violin and viola, as well as Stradivari and Montagnana cello models. He used red spirit-based varnish. A viola he created was illustrated in the catalogue of the Sacconi Loan Exhibition in New York in 1966.
