Johann Stephan Thumhardt was a pupil of Buchstetter. He established himself independently in Straubing from 1769. He was considered the best maker of this family. His elegant model featured long open 'c' bouts, medium arching, and a golden-brown varnish with good depth and transparency. He also made double basses, viols, and plucked instruments.
