August Martin Gemünder
Violin maker
(1862 – 1928)
Not until 1905 did August Martin Gemünder (1862–1928) settle on a model of his own — the first thirty years of his New York career, dating back to when he joined his father's bench as a boy in 1875 and completed his own first violin two years later in 1877, were spent working through other men's patterns instead: Maggini, Hieronymus Amati, a pair of Stradivari copies dated 1705 and 1724, and two Guarneri del Gesù outlines, one large-pattern and one small.
