François Jude Gaulard
Bow maker
(1787 – 1857)
By 1855, François Jude Gaulard (1787–1857) had moved his workshop to Troyes, bringing his son Louis Auguste in alongside him — a fitting last chapter for a maker whose own early bows had leaned heavily on Pajeot's example. He was nothing if not productive, turning out silver- and gold-mounted bows in real volume from pernambuco, ironwood, snakewood, and whatever other sturdy imported timber came to hand; some frogs were left open, others faced in ivory with a double-fluted back and a deep central groove. His early stamp read "Gaulard, M," later shortened to just "Gaulard." His own father, Louis Gaulard, had been a maker before him.
