Joseph Collingwood established himself in Ottumwa from 1882. He was a prolific self-taught maker who worked on Stradivari and Guarneri models. He also created a smaller pattern called the 'Collingwood de Luxe. ' His own varnish was used, and he was assisted by his son Drew Collingwood. Over 700 instruments were completed by him.
