Jacob Rayman

Violin maker

German-born Jacob Rayman was one of the first violin makers in Britain, and his violin from 1641 is probably the oldest surviving English violin. He was trained in the Bavarian violin making center of Füssen before moving to London around 1625, and his workmanship reflects that training rather than the methods of the English viol-making tradition. He was evidently somewhat prolific, and his work was ...Read More well regarded during his time, but little of his output remains, due perhaps to misattribution of his work to Brescian or better-known Bavarian makers. He used two models, one smaller than the standard and one larger, with extended c-bouts and long tapered corners. Some examples bear decorative inlaid purfling.
