Sydney Braithwaite Yeoman
Bow maker
(1876 – 1948)
First employed as an odd-jobs man by the firm of W.E. Hill & Sons, Sidney Braithwaite Yeoman began working as a bowmaker in 1885. The firm was inundated with orders at the time, and Yeoman was brought in to work alongside more established maker Samuel Allen, who was later replaced by William Retford. Retford and Yeoman became close friends. When Yeoman volunteered for military service in WWI and returned a broken man, unable to meet the firm's demands for quality workmanship, Retford corrected the deficiencies in his work. Yeoman's bows are marked with a singe nick beneath the mortise.
