Domingos Ferreira Capela
Violin maker
(1904 – 1976)
Domingos Ferreira Capela apprenticed as a cooper (barrel-maker) and cabinet maker. He began repairing violins and commenced making them in 1924. He was awarded first and second place medals at the Wieniawski competition in Poznan in 1972. His son Joaquim Domingos (b. 1934) assisted him and later became a distinguished maker in his own right. His work featured a very well-finished style in the modern Italian school, covered with a consistently applied spirit-based varnish of golden-orange color. It followed the Stradivari model, although his early work reflected a more Iberian tradition with a large head and slender pegbox. He had a personal model with upright, widely spaced holes.
