Giuseppe Baldantoni
Violin maker
(1784 – 1873)
Simultaneously a musical instrument maker and repairer, bass player, and weapons manufacturer, Giuseppe Baldantoni probably learned his craft simply by imitating instruments available to him. The need to work quickly sometimes affected his work adversely, but on the whole it represents the finest of 19th century violin making in the Marche region. Despite the variegated nature of his career, he was quite prolific, making over 200 instruments in his lifetime, of which the double basses are especially well regarded. Baldantoni's instruments possess excellent materials and bold and precise craftsmanship, almost Cremonese in style. His sons succeeded him in business upon his death in 1873.
