Giovanni Dollenz
Violin maker
(1802 – 1857)
Giovanni Dollenz was initially thought to have learned his craft from Cremonese violin maker Lorenzo Storioni during Storioni's itinerant travels to Trieste in the early 1800s. However, proof of Storioni's presence there is limited to several instruments bearing Trieste labels. Furthermore, Dollenz was born in 1802, far too late to have studied with Storioni before 1810, when he returned to Cremona. One salient element of Storioni's style, however, is clear and present in Dollenz's work, and would become a hallmark of Trieste violin making: the upper portions of the c-bouts are extended into hooked corners. Varnish is somewhat transparent. The work of Dollenz and his son Giuseppe is interesting and well regarded, and the two almost certainly collaborated in the 1850s . Though Giovanni's work shows greater artistic freedom, his son's displays greater refinement, especially the scrolls and f-holes.
