William H. Luff
Violin maker
(1904 – 1993)
William H. Luff was an important and influential post-war violin maker in England. He was a violinist who was introduced to violin making by F. Howard. From 1920, he apprenticed under M. Millant at Dykes & Son in London. He spent his military service in the R. A. F. from 1939 to 1945, and afterward worked for J. & A. Beare from 1946 to 1955. He established himself independently in Shepherd's Bush, west London. After the death of F. Howard in 1956, he took over as a teacher at the North London evening classes that had originally inspired him. He retired to Worthing in 1969 but continued to make instruments. He was a prolific maker, preferring to create copies of Guarneri del Gesù, using a varnish that was used by Bazin in Mirecourt and passed on through G. Falisse. His finish was shaded and antiqued. Only one cello was recorded, which was a copy of Montagnana.
