Hiroshi Iizuka
(b. 1945)
Japanese-American luthier renowned for his innovative and meticulously crafted violins and violas. Born in Maebashi, Japan, in 1945, he began his training with Soroku Murata in Tokyo before continuing his studies in Mittenwald, Germany, where he earned his Journeyman’s diploma with honors. In 1977, he established his workshop in Pennsylvania, where he has since produced more than 380 instruments, many now in the hands of leading professional musicians worldwide.
Iizuka is particularly celebrated for his pioneering viola designs, most notably the ergonomically refined “Rubenesque” model, which successfully balances acoustic power with player comfort. His instruments are distinguished by their depth of tone, strong projection, and refined craftsmanship. Widely respected by prominent violists, his work has made a lasting contribution to the development of the modern viola.
