Samuel Kolstein
Bow maker
–
Samuel Kolstein was a double bass player. He was largely self-taught as a violin and bow maker. In 1958, he moved to Merrick, New York, where he established a still-flourishing business that is now operated by his son Barrie. He completed approximately 50 violins, violas, and cellos based on Stradivari and Guarneri models, as well as a bass modeled after Vincenzo Panormo. From around 1945, he concentrated on bows, producing over 2, 000 in various grades. His branding included S. KOLSTEIN, SAMUEL KOISFEIN & SON, or SK, with the highest quality sticks branded as S. KOLSTEIN or S. KOISFEIN NY.
