Samuel Allen

Samuel Allen worked for the firm of W.E. Hill & Sons in the 1880s and is known as one of its finest craftsmen. It is possible that he learned bow making before joining the firm, but the evidence is not certain. Allen is especially notable for having made each of the individual parts of the bow himself, which is a rarity in Hill bows after his departure around 1890. His models are more varied than those of other Hill makers, and are based on several French models. His cello bows, which usually follow a Tourte model, are particularly prized. After leaving the Hill firm Allen took up violin making and is known to have made at least one double bass.
