Michele Mecatti
(b. 1964)
Born in Naples in 1964, Mecatti studied at the International School of Violin Makers in Cremona under Vincenzo Bissolotti, graduating in 1986.
He moved to Paris and worked with Pierre Barthel and Bernard Sabatier until 1990 before studying bow restoration with Jean and Pierre Grunberger. Mecatti stayed in Paris until 1998, working first on his own and then in partnership with Laulhère and Giovanna Chittò. He also worked on restoration projects for the Musèe de la Musique.
After his time in Paris, Mecatti moved to Florence and opened the Sorgentone-Mecatti workshop with Paolo Sorgentone. Mecatti produces new instruments, as well as specializing in the restoration and maintenance of bows and commerce. His work is inspired by makers such as Nicolo Gagliano, Pietro Guarnieri of Mantova and the Amati brothers.
