Vladimír Pilař (1926–2008) belonged to one of the great Czech violin-making dynasties. Born in Hradec Králové, he trained under his father, Karel Pilař, and later passed the tradition to his son Tomáš and granddaughter Šárka. A meticulous and technically rigorous craftsman, Pilař devoted particular attention to the selection of tonewood, varnish and the acoustic properties of his instruments. He won recognition at numerous international competitions and welcomed makers from around the world into his workshop. His finely crafted and highly regarded instruments established him as one of the leading Czech violin makers of the 20th century.
