Nicolas Augustin Chappuy trained in Mirecourt and was active in Paris from around 1750. He was prolific, exhibiting a wide range of qualities typical of both the Mirecourt and 'vieux Paris' schools. His instruments were generally flat-arched with large scrolls, and sometimes featured ornate carvings. While he typically used plainer materials, he occasionally employed good figured maple. The varnish was a fairly hard yellow that was prone to chipping, although other colors and qualities were also observed. Like his contemporaries, he was known for producing some very fine viola d'amores, quintons, and pochettes. His brand appeared beneath the endpin or back button: 'N. Chappuy à Paris'.
