Jean-Auguste Darte
Violin maker
(1830 – 1892)
Jean-Auguste Darte worked in Mirecourt from 1865. He was a pupil, son-in-law, and successor of N. F. b. 1830, Paris, d. 1892 Mirecourt, France, Vuillaume. He also spent several years working for J. B. Vuillaume. His instruments followed the Stradivari model, with a scroll that was slightly lacking in refinement and featured a golden-yellow spirit varnish. After 1925, the Darte name was utilized by the Deblaye and Meunier company in Mirecourt and appeared as a brand on their commercially produced instruments. Original instruments were branded and bore a printed label.
