Joseph Withers was active from 1856 and worked for J. Brown in Spitalfields starting in 1869, later establishing himself independently in Caledonian Road, north London, in 1879. That same year, he received the first prize at the Westminster Exhibition. He completed 150 violins, 12 violas, and some cellos, with violins modeled on the Stradivari 1716 'Messie. '.
