Christopher Wise


Violin maker
(1632 – after 1679)

Early English maker, mainly known for his viols. His customers included Samuel Pepys, who frequently mentions him in his Diary of 1663. One of Wise's violins dated 1661 is thought to be the earliest surviving English violin. Worked at Vine Court and Half Moon Alley, both near Bishopsgate in London.
