Mathias Hornsteiner was known as Tax'. He was the most distinguished maker of the family, influenced by Cremonese modeling and featuring Tyrolean archings of medium height. The soundholes displayed both Stainer and Stradivari styles. Materials varied in quality, and the varnish was thin, available in several shades ranging from pale golden-yellow to dark red-brown. Notable were the violas and cellos based on classical models.
