Luigi Bajoni

Luigi Bajoni, active in Milan and probably the last of that city's makers still working in a genuinely traditional style, is best remembered today as the man who gave Enrico Marchetti — later one of the founders of the modern Piedmontese school — his start: Marchetti apprenticed under him from around age fourteen for roughly two years, before moving on to Gaetano Rossi's workshop. Bajoni's own instruments favour a large, slightly over-square model with a Brescian flavour, a broad edge, a large open scroll, and extended soundholes; one period assessment found the overall effect more ungainly than handsome. His varnish is clear or lightly tinted over a dark ground, and his cellos are considered the more successful side of his output.
