Benedikt Wagner
Violin maker
(1720 – 1796)
Benedikt Wagner worked in Dürrwangen around 1750, according to some sources. His work on the Stainer model was very precise and commendable. He was likely the finest maker of this family. The arching was of medium height, and the narrow edge featured finely laid purfling that extended to the very end of the corners. The scroll exhibited a very Germanic style, with a short goose-necked pegbox and a well-turned volute that was extended with a curving gouge cut up into the eye. The varnish was particularly well-textured and had a transparent golden-brown hue. He branded the instrument below the back button with a reverse stamp featuring raised letters that read "Wagner. " Additionally, he branded below the endpin on the lower rib with "Elwang. ".
