Johannes Francis Cuypers
Violin maker
(1766 – 1828)
Johannes Francis Cuypers, son and assistant of Johannes Theodorus, worked for his father until his death in 1808, including a period from 1783 to 1823 spent in Liedestraat, Amsterdam. Recognized as the most refined maker of the family, he produced more Stradivarian flat arches with a polished finish, sometimes imitating the blackened chamfers of a Stradivarius head. His varnish improved upon his father's recipe, resulting in a richer, more transparent, and warmer tone. Labels were generally handwritten.
