Lionel Tertis collaborated with Lawrence Cocker when the two worked together on the large "Tertis Model" viola — a pattern that never quite caught on generally, but that speaks to the regard Cocker's colleagues in the English trade held him in, entirely self-taught though he was. That same inventive streak shows up elsewhere in his career: a "split cane" bow, borrowing techniques not normally applied to bow-making, and a switch from commercial Millington varnish to a deep rust-brown copal recipe he invented himself.
