Joseph Scott
–
Farmer and part-time maker. Active in Haltcliff Farm, Eskett (formerly Heskett New Market), parish of Caldbeck. His instruments are numbered but not dated. The connection with another local maker, Thomas Dennison, are unclear. Although they were contemporary and their styles are similar, it cannot be said whether one was a pupil and another the master. Scott taught J. Rook 1795-1800, but on his death left his business and violin making tools to his housekeeper, Mary Richardson. Very clean neat work on a personal model; low rounded arch. Slightly Florentine in appearance with extended sloping soundholes, and small scroll set on swan-necked pegbox. Pale golden-yellow varnish.
