Thomas Thorley was the son and pupil of Nathaniel Thornley. Three instruments were cited in the Hill Archive: a cello featuring a flat arch, broad purfling with negligible edge flute, a large head, and 'tawny varnish, probably oil'; a small viola from 1879 with 'exceptionally long' soundholes and dark brown varnish; and a violin dated 1865.
