Joseph Thomas Klotz
Violin maker
(1743 – after 1811)
Joseph Thomas Klotz was the son of Sebastian Klotz. His work was very inconsistent, presumably created for sale in various grades, and featured the typical Klotz style characterized by low and medium arching and yellow varnish. While his craftsmanship is noted, it is also described as rare, with moderately flat archings and beautifully shaped f-holes. Joseph usually used only his first name on his labels, while his son, Joseph II, signed his work "Joseph Klotz junior" to distinguish himself from his father.
