Jacob Thoma established himself as a clock maker in Vienna. He became a self-taught violin maker after his daughter's success as a violinist. His early work utilized wood from a local church. In 1888, he received a gold medal in Vienna. He emigrated to the USA in 1891 and established himself in Boston with the assistance of his son Alexander.
