Jacob Thoma established himself as a clock maker in Vienna. He became a self-taught violin maker after his daughter's success as a violinist. His early work utilized wood from a local church. In 1888, he received a gold medal in Vienna. He emigrated to the USA in 1891 and established himself in Boston with the assistance of his son Alexander. He crafted over 250 violins, 30 violas, and 15 cellos. His personal model was named the Thoma Solo Violin, and he also created copies of Cremonese models, showcasing fine workmanship.
