H. C. Stümpel
(1838 – c. 1900)
H. C. Stümpel was the son, pupil, and successor of C. H. Stümpel. A conscientious maker, he conducted extensive personal research and developed a method for graduating the plates that was applicable to his various models and styles of arching. These styles included high-arched 'Façon Bagatella', medium-arched 'Façon Joachim', and flat-arched 'Faust'. He was a prolific worker who sold his instruments at very low prices, yet the work was generally precise and professional. He preferred balsam pine for the fronts. Various models and names were cited on labels, accompanied by a diagram of his plate graduation method.
