Johann Strobl I
Violin maker
(1656 0r 1653 – 1717)
Johann Strobl was said to be the son of Elias Strobl, although no archival evidence has been found to confirm this. Baptisms under this name occurred in Vils and Nissen, but it remains impossible to ascertain which is pertinent to this luthier. He created high-arched, workmanlike instruments, often lacking purfling. Recorded were violas and cellos featuring carved female heads. The varnish was of poor quality. His name sometimes appeared as "Storbr" on labels. Johann Strobl, Geigenmacher, worked in Hallein in 1714.
