John Friedrich
Bow maker / Violin maker
(1858 – 1943)
John Friedrich was a pupil of Schonger in Kassel and worked for Möckel in Berlin, Hammig in Leipzig, and other locations in Germany. In 1883, he emigrated to New York and established the company John Friedrich & Bro. with his brother William. Many craftsmen were employed by him. He received awards at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893 and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904. He produced approximately 300 violins, violas, cellos, and bows, all modeled on classical instruments, with some featuring artificially aged and shaded varnish. Cellos were comparatively rare but highly appreciated.
